How Your Dog Will Make You Healthier

Owning a dog comes with numerous health benefits!

Not only do they bring us unconditional love, but they're also devoted companions that keep us feeling appreciated and never bored. The benefits of having a dog don’t just have to stay in the realm of emotions – research has demonstrated that man’s best friend helps us to maintain greater physical, psychological, and emotional health.

Here are 5 ways your dog can improve your health:

1. Dogs may strengthen your heart.

Did you know that an extensive review of scientific studies published over 70 years found that dog owners had a lower risk of death, thanks to factors like lower blood pressure and less stress? For instance, petting your dog can calm your nerves and ease blood pressure, which makes you feel good and can keep your heart strong.

2. Dogs help reduce stress.

Being around a dog can help reduce stress and alleviate anxiety. Not only is that good for your heart, but it’s also good for your mental health. And it doesn’t even need to be your dog. Many colleges offer students the chance to play with puppies during final exams to ease their stress. And therapy dogs are often used to lower stress and anxiety in hospital patients.

3. Dogs can improve your social life.

Research has shown that dog owners may find it easier to make friends. After all, think of how often you talk to someone, or they talk to you simply because there’s a dog by your side. Some research also suggests that you may appear more attractive and likable with a dog.

4. Dogs can make you fitter.

Almost all dogs need to go for at least one walk every day. Studies have shown that dog owners walk their dogs approximately 300 minutes a week. People without dogs only spend about one-third of that time walking. Playing with your dog also keeps you more active.

5. Dogs can make you happier.

There are so many reasons that dogs can make us happy. Whether you’re sad, angry, stressed, or anxious, spending time with your dog can lift your mood and brighten your day. A dog's unconditional love and constant companionship can also reduce feelings of loneliness.

Having a dog can be a great way to kick-start a healthier lifestyle. A dog can bring joy and companionship to your life while providing daily physical activity through walks and outdoor play. Having and interacting with a dog can make you feel good and reduce stress. However, healthy living is not just limited to owning a pet. Eating a balanced diet, incorporating physical activity into your daily routine, and getting regular check-ups with your doctor are all important steps in living a healthy life.
