Why You Need to Moisturize Your Skin

As cooler weather approaches dry skin becomes more common. The shift in temperature and humidity leads to less moisture in the air. Your skin is your body’s largest organ and taking good care of it can help the skin to be at its very best and it can also keep skin healthier.

Here are 3 good reasons to moisturize your skin every day:

  • It helps reduce skin problems. Keeping your skin well-moisturized helps to prevent dryness, which can lead to itchiness, redness and flakiness. Moisturized skin also stops skin from becoming too oily (as long as you use an oil-free moisturizer).
  • It helps fight wrinkles.  When skin is drier, your wrinkles become more pronounced. Applying moisturizer will help your skin to plump up, thus making the skin look firmer showing less wrinkles.
  • It helps skin repair itself. The skin on our face, neck and ears shed skin cells more rapidly than other parts of our body. Your skin is constantly shedding old skin cells and regenerating new ones. Applying moisturizer helps the skin repair itself, allowing newer skin cells to rise to the surface. Massaging your skin when applying lotion will help stimulate blood flow which encourages new cell generation. As the skin repairs itself, it will help to serve as a more effective barrier against bacteria that may otherwise get into areas under the skin's surface, leading to serious infections requiring antibiotics.

Tips to Keep Skin Well-Moisturized

Having understood the significance of skin-well moisturized, here are a few ways to help you stay hydrated.

  • Drink water. In addition to using a topical moisturizer, much of the moisture your skin receives comes from inside your body. Drinking water is not only good for your skin but for every cell and organ in your body.
  • Keep showers or baths short. The longer you bathe, the more you strip away your skin’s natural oils. Try turning down the temperature since hot water is more drying than lukewarm or cool water.
  • Turn on a humidifier. A humidifier will help to add much-needed moisture to the air.
  • Use mild soaps and cleansers.  Look for gentle, fragrance-free skin-care and cleaning products. You want to make sure you are not stripping your skin of your natural oils.
