Summer Cold Sores

Photo of a woman with a cold sore on her lip Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are a particularly irritating skin issue to address during the summer. While they can occur year-round, cold sores tend to flare up much more during the warmer weather and can cause uncomfortable symptoms that can ruin your days spent enjoying the summer sun.

According to PIH Health dermatologist, Timothy Almazan MD, “Cold sores are contagious, painful, and unsightly blisters that can appear on the lips or around the mouth.” Dr. Almazan continues, “They are caused by the herpes simplex virus and tend to be more common in the summer because of the hot, humid weather, which can act as a catalyst for the virus.”

So why do cold sores tend to be more problematic during the summertime? Many believe that a combination of factors, such as increased exposure to sunlight, increased levels of stress, increased humidity, and less sleep, can contribute to the frequency of cold sores in the summertime.

If you get cold sores, it’s important to take extra precautions during summer.

Here are a few tips to help you avoid the virus.

  • Avoid sharing personal items such as lip balm, towels, and eating utensils.
  • Try using a humidifier in your home or office to keep your indoor environment moist and cool.
  • Avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • Wear a light layer of sunblock with an SPF of 30 or higher to protect your lips.
  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated, as dehydration can make cold sores more likely.
  • Eat foods rich in lysine and vitamin C for added protection against cold sores.
  • Avoid touching or scratching any existing cold sores.
  • Apply ice or aloe vera to the affected area.
  • Speak to your doctor. Depending on the severity of the outbreak, they may prescribe you an antiviral medication or a topical cream to help reduce and heal the cold sores more quickly, or they may suggest an over-the-counter treatment.

If your cold sore does flare up during summer, there are ways to treat and prevent further outbreaks.

Remember to arm yourself with the knowledge necessary to keep yourself and your loved ones safe from cold sores this summer. By following a few simple steps, you can help ensure that you have a happy, healthy summer. So don’t let pesky cold sores ruin your summer fun – take care of yourself and enjoy the season in comfort and health.
