Rise and Shine: Why You Should Switch to a Morning Workout Routine

The Morning Advantage

Mental clarity and focus. "Morning exercise primes your mind and body for the day ahead, helping to enhance concentration and decision-making," explains PIH Health Physician Sahir Gharib MD. Working out in the morning boosts brain function and improves mental sharpness and focus throughout the day.

You’ll feel more energized. Morning workouts often leave you feeling more energized, not tired. The increase in energy can last throughout the day, giving you the stamina to tackle the day ahead.

You’re more likely to follow healthy habits. By starting your day feeling accomplished, you’re more likely to build on that momentum and make better choices for your health later in the day. This could mean reaching for nutritious snacks, staying hydrated, or sticking to a balanced meal plan.

You may sleep better. While exercise is beneficial for sleep, working out too close to bedtime can sometimes make it difficult to fall asleep. By exercising earlier in the day, you’re prepared for better sleep without disrupting your nighttime routine.

Fewer Distractions. When exercise is the first thing on your schedule, there are fewer distractions or reasons to skip it. Morning exercisers tend to be more consistent and less likely to be derailed by last-minute meetings, family obligations, or fatigue.

Staying active as the days get darker earlier is important for your overall health and wellness. To find a doctor, go to PIHHealth.org/Doctors
