Cold Weather Skin Care Tips

Photo of Hands with Dry SkinWinter is coming. Don’t let the cold weather take a toll on your skin. Jannett Nguyen MD, a dermatologist at PIH Health notes, “The cold winter air holds less moisture and can leave your skin feeling itchy and irritated. It can also make it look dry, red, or flaky.”

The good news is that you don’t have to let the seasons dictate the health and beauty of your skin. Here are a few tips to keep your skin healthy and hydrated!

  • Moisturize. Skin tends to be drier during the winter, making it essential to moisturize your skin daily. “Be careful about using the same moisturizer for your body and face because some ingredients may block pores and lead to breakouts,” says Dr. Nguyen.  “For your face, look for a moisturizer that is labeled “non-comedogenic,” meaning it does not block pores. For your body, use a thicker moisturizer, ideally after a shower, to seal the moisture in your skin. Ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin are effective at keeping your skin well-hydrated.  It is preferable to use a moisturizer that is free of fragrance or other additives that may irritate your skin.”
  • Shower with warm water, not hot. Hot and steamy showers on cold days may sound ideal, but that hot water may exacerbate dry skin. Warm water is less harsh on your skin.
  • Humidify indoor air. When temps are low, humidity is typically low as well. Many heating systems also pull moisture from the air indoors. Investing in a humidifier in your home can help restore moisture indoors. Sleeping with a humidifier in your room can also keep your nasal passages from drying out, which can lead to nose bleeds.
  • Use products made for sensitive skin. Fragrances and dyes in beauty products can worsen skin issues, so look for products made for sensitive skin. These will typically be free of ingredients that can dry and irritate the skin.
  • Keep applying sunscreen. UV rays can still damage your skin in cold and cloudy weather. For instance, snow reflects the sun’s rays, increasing UV exposure even more. Applying sunscreen will help your skin stay healthy.
  • Protect yourself from the wind. Cold and windy days can wreak havoc on your skin and lips. Protect your skin with moisturizer and apply a petroleum-based lip balm. Cover your face, neck and ears with a soft scarf, especially when the wind is harsh.
  • Don’t tan. It may be tempting to use a tanning bed to restore your summer glow, but artificial tanning increases your risk of skin cancer. Instead, try a self-tanning cream or spray.
