A Guide to Staying Active During the Winter
As the days grow shorter and the temperatures drop, many people find it challenging to stay active. “Staying active during the colder months is beneficial for your physical health and wellness,” shares PIH Health Physician Martin Sechrist. Make it a priority to stay active, stay safe and embrace the joy of movement during this time of the year!
Stay Hydrated
“Hydration is just as important in cold weather as it is in hot weather,” shares Dr. Sechrist. “Cold air can be drying and you may not feel as thirsty as you would during a summer workout.” Make sure to drink water before, during and after your exercise session to prevent dehydration.
Dress in Layers
Layering your clothing allows you to regulate your body temperature effectively in cold weather. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, then put on an insulating layer to keep your body heat in. Complete the look with a weatherproof outer layer to stay protected. If it’s extremely cold, consider hand and foot warmers for added comfort.
Warm-Up Thoroughly
Cold muscles are more prone to injury, so take the time to warm up adequately before starting any exercise. Jumping jacks, high knees and arm circles are excellent warm-up exercises. Just as important, cooling down and gentle stretching techniques help reduce muscle tension and soreness while improving flexibility.
Be Mindful of Slippery Surfaces
As the winter season sets in, it's crucial to be mindful of slippery surfaces when exercising. Whether you're jogging, hiking or simply taking a brisk walk, icy or wet paths can pose serious risks to your safety. For outdoor activities, stick to well-lit, secure pathways. Purchase traction-rich footwear that is suited for slick surfaces to lower the chance of falls and injuries.
Be Prepared for Emergencies
“Having an emergency plan can make all the difference in staying safe while exercising in cold weather,” shares Dr. Sechrist. Carry a fully charged phone, let a friend know where you are and when you expect to be back, and be mindful of slicker roads. Combat earlier sunsets by using a flashlight to illuminate dark trails or pathways. Pack a first aid kit as a precaution in case any minor accidents happen.
By following these guidelines, you can maintain your fitness routine and make the most out of the winter season!
