Your primary care provider is your health advocate and first contact for care.
Primary Care Services
• Preventive care, including annual physicals, routine check-ups, and immunizations
• Diagnosis and treatment for common conditions
• Help managing chronic (ongoing) medical conditions
• Referrals to specialty care when needed
Primary Care Specialties
Find a PCP with the experience and care that fits your needs:
• Family medicine – Cares for all ages, from newborns to older adults
• Gynecology – Focuses on the health needs of women
• Internal medicine – Cares for adults, including those with multiple health conditions
• Pediatrics – Cares for children from birth through age 21
Types of PCPs
Build a long-term relationship with a PCP who gets to know you and your family:
• Doctor of Medicine (MD) – Physician with traditional medical training
• Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) – Physician with additional training in the musculoskeletal system and a focus on holistic care
• Nurse practitioner (NP) – Has a master’s or doctorate degree and advanced clinical training to practice general medicine and works as a part of your physicians team
• Physician assistant (PA) – Has master degrees and advanced clinical training to practice general medicine and works as a part of your physicians team
All four types of providers can perform routine exams, diagnose, and treat your condition and prescribe medications.

• Do the office hours work for my schedule?
• Does the doctor accept my insurance?
Call the doctor’s office and ask questions if you need more information.
Meet Your Doctor
It’s important that you feel comfortable talking with your doctor. When you meet with the doctor for the first time, consider:
• Does the doctor listen well?
• Does he or she explain things in a way you can understand?
• Do you think you could build a partnership with the doctor?
