Breast Plastic Surgery
For women who want to change the size, shape or look of their breasts, PIH Health offers a range of options. We also provide breast reconstruction for breast cancer patients.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also known as mammoplasty, is a surgery performed to enlarge the female breasts for a number of reasons:
- To enhance the body contour of a woman, who for personal reasons feels that her breast size is too small
- To correct a loss in breast volume after pregnancy
- To balance breast size, when there is a significant difference between the size of the breasts
- To restore breast shape after partial or total loss of the breasts from various conditions
- To correct a failure of breast development due to a severe breast abnormality
- To correct or improve results of existing breast implants for cosmetic or reconstructive reasons
Silicone and Saline
Silicone and saline breast implants are both approved by the FDA and considered safe for patients. Saline implants have an outer silicone layer and are filled with a sterile saltwater solution. They are available to patients 18 and older. Silicone implants have an outer silicone layer and are filled with silicone gel. Many patients like silicone implants because they look and feel more natural. They are available to patients 22 and older for breast augmentation and to patients of any age for breast reconstruction. Silicone implants have been approved by the FDA since 2006.
PIH Health partners with Mentor Worldwide, a leading manufacturer of the highest quality breast implants, to provide MENTOR® MemoryGel® Silicone Gel-Filled Breast Implants. Implants, whether saline or silicone, do not last for a lifetime and will need to be replaced eventually.
Breast Lift
Breast lift or mastopexy is a surgical procedure to raise and reshape sagging breasts. Factors such as pregnancy, nursing, weight change, aging and gravity produce changes in the appearance of a woman’s breasts. As the skin loses its elasticity, the breasts often lose their shape and begin to sag. Breast lift surgery can also reduce the size of the areola, the darker skin around the nipple. If your breasts are small or have lost volume after pregnancy, breast implants inserted in conjunction with mastopexy can increase both firmness and size. The best candidates for mastopexy are healthy, emotionally stable women who have realistic expectations about what this type of surgery can accomplish. Breasts of any size can be lifted, but the results may not last as long in women with heavy, large breasts. Mastopexy does leave permanent, noticeable scars on the breasts, and the breasts will be smaller than your current size. We offer a variety of different surgical techniques for reshaping and lifting the female breast.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction surgery reduces the size of the breasts. The procedure helps women who have chronic pain caused by the weight and size of their breasts, including headaches or back, neck and shoulder pain. Breast reduction surgery can also help cosmetic problems such as persistent bra-strap grooves, scar-like lines in the skin, difficulty finding clothes that fit and low self-confidence. We offer a variety of surgical techniques to reduce and reshape the female breast.
Breast Reconstruction
We work closely with the Patricia L. Scheifly Breast Health Center to provide comprehensive care to breast cancer patients. Learn more about the breast reconstruction process and surgical options, which can begin at the same time as breast cancer surgery.
