Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)

Help your body heal from a wound or another condition with hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), available through the Marjorie and John M. Eagle Wound Healing Center at PIH Health. This simple treatment delivers extra oxygen to your blood to speed up the healing process, so you feel better. 

Conditions Treated

HBOT may help if you experience:

• A wound that won’t heal for at least four weeks
• Carbon monoxide poisoning
• Decompression sickness
• Gangrene (dead tissue)
• Gas embolism (bubble blocking blood flow)

How HBOT Works

You’ll lie in a comfortable chamber while breathing 100 percent pure oxygen. (Air you breathe in everyday life is only about 20 percent oxygen.) The chamber’s air pressure is also three times higher than normal air pressure. This means your blood can carry much more oxygen than usual to your wound for healing.

What to Expect

Treatment sessions last about two hours. During HBOT, you can watch TV, read, or just rest. Talk to a nearby technician at any time using the chamber’s easy telephone system.

Insurance Covers HBOT

Medicare, Medi-Cal, and most private insurance companies cover HBOT. Ask us for help meeting your insurance plan’s requirements for coverage.
