Types of Weight-Loss Surgeries
Turn to expert weight-loss specialists at PIH Health to help you choose which type of bariatric surgery will meet your goals and preferences.
Which Procedure Is Right For Me?
When you choose between procedures, your care team will:
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass surgery improves metabolic diseases, such as diabetes, by changing the path of food through your body. Your doctor will make your stomach smaller and bypass your small intestine, so you feel hungry less often and absorb fewer calories.
Gastric Sleeve
Gastric sleeve, also known as sleeve gastrectomy, is the most common option for weight-loss surgery in the United States. Your doctor will remove 80 percent of the stomach, leaving a smaller stomach in the shape of a banana. This procedure helps you eat less and feel full longer.
Adjustable Gastric Band
Gastric banding, also known as lap-band, is when your doctor places an inflatable band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch above the band. Your doctor can adjust the band to help you control portion size. This procedure helps you eat less and lose weight.
Minimally Invasive Techniques
Rely on your surgeon to use minimally invasive (laparoscopic) techniques whenever possible. During the procedure, your doctor will use tiny tools and make small incisions. This means you’ll have smaller scars, a faster recovery, and less pain.
