Dr. Shindel attributes an interest in science and research with his decision to pursue medicine. He also enjoys helping people. “Having had several family members with colon cancer, I became committed to making a difference,” says Dr. Shindel, who’s gratified to see fewer patients developing the disease. In practice for 30 years, he’s performed 50,000 colonoscopies and calls gastroenterology a unique blend of one-on-one patient time, high-tech endoscopic procedures and treatments.
Prior to his role with PIH Health, Dr. Shindel was the Director of the Colon Cancer Prevention Alliance in Whittier that began in 1991. Dr. Shindel and his wife celebrated 25 years of marriage by climbing California’s Mt. Whitney and cycling 121 miles to Badwater, Death Valley, reaching the highest and lowest points in the contiguous United States in 24 hours.
