Erika Abueg DO is a family medicine practitioner with subspecialties in women's health and geriatrics. After earning her medical degree, she completed her residency at PIH Health Whittier Hospital, where she completed an academic track in the treatment of tropical diseases that consisted of extra training in Sierra Leone. At the conclusion of her residency, Dr. Abueg received the 'Above and Beyond the Call of Duty' award from the PIH Health Family Medicine Residency Staff.

Born to parents who both worked in healthcare, Dr. Abueg felt a natural draw toward a career in medicine. She says she also wanted to educate others on the value and importance of health and wellness.

"I chose family medicine as a specialty so I would have the opportunity to build lasting relationships with my patients," she explains. "I also want to be able to care for multiple generations within a family."

One of Dr. Abueg’s strength is her ability to build trust and rapport with patients. Family medicine allows her to see a variety of patients and concerns throughout the day, making every day interesting and fulfilling. She loves solving acute problems and managing chronic diseases to help her patients get better. She also likes to see patients gain more confidence in taking care of their own health.

In her free time, Dr. Abueg enjoys hiking with her dogs, exercising and playing board games with friends.

I wish that PIH offered more queer friendly care. The staff and I at this facility disagreed over me needing a pregnancy test. Quite frankly, I find it to be a mute point seeing as that I'm gay and have been in a committed relationship with a woman for many many years. It feels belitting to be required to do a pregnancy test simply because it's policy.

I was surprised that Dr. Abueg did not know much about anti-inflammatory diets. Working with older people that have arthritis, I would think that that would be a clever idea to know about. She only hesitantly suggested I look into it and was not able to guide me in one way or the other.

The nurse and Dr. Abueg apologized for my 40 minute wait! The problem seemed to be one particular receptionist and her not following sequence protocol. They made it sound like it's happened before.

Hi, my name is (PHI removed). I had an experience with Dr. Erika Abueg and it wasn't a very pleasant experience. It seemed like she was in a rush and she wasn't very concerned about my health. I'm an 82-year-old man born in 1941 and I thought that she wasn't listening to my needs or the care that I needed. I have a leukemia problem and she also gave me the response that she had a leukemia problem and not to worry about it. I'm barely able to hop around with the pain. And there were some other questions that I wanted to talk to her about but she seemed to be in a rush and not concerned about my health. I would not have another appointment with her. I would rather have an appointment with my physician, Dr. (name removed), which is a great difference between the two. If somebody can talk to her about her professional

When I scheduled my appointment, there was no availability for a good month or so which was disappointing but it wasn't an emergency. Despite that, EVERYONE was fantastic - from the front office staff to the nurses and the doctor. It was a fantastic visit.

I go to this office all the time. My primary doctor is Dr. (name removed) and I'm very happy with her. However, the doctor that I saw on the day in question, I went in for a cut on my finger and I don't feel that she knew anything. She said she didn't know what it was. She just glanced at it. She didn't hold it, touch it. I just didn't care for her. The office is always nice. The people in the office are very thorough. They're quick. I never wait more than 10 minutes and that's all I have to say.

I don't know which department is calling me because I've been in emergency, had a mammogram, and seen my primary doctor. I don't know where you're calling from, but I now have an issue with the program. I can't walk, and whatever they told me has hurt me. I don't know who to talk to, and I don't want to speak with a lawyer because I don't feel well. Thank you for calling me, but something needs to be done to change things and hire professionals because a lot of money is being wasted. Thank you.

This was the worst experience I've had at PIH. I was unable to schedule a timely appointment with my primary care physician, so I scheduled an appointment with a different doctor, (Erika Abueg). When Dr. Abueg entered the room, I immediately felt her lack of interest to be there. Dr. Abueg proceeded to ask why I was there and I started explaining my concerns. While talking through my concerns/reason for scheduling the appointment, Dr. Abueg was very uninterested and quite frankly rude about what I had to say. When I explained that other symptoms were very abnormal for me, she insisted that I had no underlying conditions and it was simply a change due to my age. I left the office feeling unheard and dismissed. I will never visit PIH offices again as I cannot schedule a timely appointment with my preferred primary care doctor and refuse to be seen by another doctor that doesn't care enough to listen to my concerns and help provide answers and/or find a solution.

This office is too busy. Appointments even for follow ups book 2-3 months out. It often feels like providers are annoyed I am there. No time to get to know them and build trust.

The nurse that was assisting the provider was extremely rude and unprofessional. I felt like crying because she talked down to me and made me feel very uncomfortable. I waited for this appointment for over two months and it felt rushed. I had a very negative experience!

The only problem I had was the insurance you have me is the wrong insurance. It's Blue Shield but it's not 65 plus. I've got Blue Shield Inspire and this created a problem last year when I had a mammogram and the insurance of course denied it because it was billed Blue Shield 65 plus. So anyway I had to go about resending my information. So if they could just correct my insurance to the correct insurance that would be very helpful.

Yes, I had a car accident on March 11th and I was taken to ER and they said to see my primary care doctor two or three days. I didn't get to see my primary care doctor for three weeks later and it was the nurse practitioner that I got to see. So that was very disappointing to me. She was very nice to me and very helpful. So I don't have a complaint against the nurse practitioner. But I just feel having to wait three weeks after a car accident to see somebody is not acceptable. So hopefully there's something that you can do about that. Thank you.

I appreciate that the doctor is dedicated to her patients. She was sick, but well protected with her mask & gloves. I didn't have to see another doctor or had to reschedule my appointment, I really appreciate that she cares enough to help her patients out...that's dedication!

Dr.Erika Abueg was unprofessional. As soon as she came into the office she seemed upset. She made me feel uncomfortable and belittled how I was feeling. She was accusatory, instead of asking what I was dealing with. She proceeded to, what felt like an intimidation tactic, inform me that if I did not improve in my condition in 6 weeks she would not help me and she would send me to a psychiatrist. I was unaware there was a time stamp on feeling depressed and dealing with anxiety. In addition, when she walked out of the office she made a rude remark, "pathetic excuse". I'm more than certain that remark was about me, seeing as she had a bad attitude towards me. I would not recommend any one suffering from postpartum depression to this doctor. I left the office feeling worse than when I arrived. My experience with PIH has been great until now. I will no longer be visiting this medical office. Patients should be treated with empathy.

This provider makes me feel like I'm wasting her time. This provider treats me with disrespect and affects the way that I communicate my medical needs with her. She has no sympathy, empathy or makes people feel like it's just a number and ready for the next one to come in. I would not trust a provider like this with my health concerns when I feel that it's almost like I'm bothering her to be there, very disrespectful in her demeanor and her approach.

Dr. Abueg and the office staff in Whittier were wonderful! I love that Dr. Abueg has very direct communication because that's how I communicate best as well. It's becoming harder and harder to make appointments with my primary physician. Telling patients to go to urgent care is not always the best approach. Then when I go to urgent care they tell me to follow up with my primary doctor and I can't get an appointment within a reasonable time. I have been with PIH for a while and love the doctors but when you need immediate care sending a person to urgent care is not the answer!
