Dr. Bui chose to specialize in geriatric medicine because of its holistic approach to patient care. "Geriatric medicine emphasizes how acute and chronic conditions affect patients' lives at home, their family or caregivers, and their ability to live their lives to the fullest," he explains. "Geriatric medicine focuses on trying to reduce hospitalizations, minimizing drug side effects, discussing advanced care planning, and improving overall quality of life while respecting patient's wishes." Dr. Bui enjoys practicing geriatric medicine because it requires good communication and teamwork with his patients, their family and caregivers, their subspecialty doctors, pharmacists, physical and occupational therapists, social workers, and other support staff. Navigating through all of this can sometimes be challenging, he says, but it is so important to the care of his patients that he makes it a priority.
